(More customer reviews)Imagine if your mailman had the sarcastic wit of Dave Barry, James Herriot's knowledge of dog psychology minus the sentimental love for the dogs (Herriot's encounters with Mrs. Pumphrey's Tricky Woo being child's play compared to what your mailman has gone through), Tom Sawyer's knack for getting into trouble, and P.G. Wodehouse's penchant for writing sentences with metaphor-popping descriptions and humorous ironies. Then pretend such a person took his most memorable experiences in his many years of delivering the mail and wrote about it. If that book was placed into your hands, it would be "Walking with the Mailman."
Austin Brown has succeeded in telling his stories - from some of the real-life human dramas he's encountered, to finding the true "pot" of gold every postman seeks, to being bitten on his route by his ex-dog - in memorable ways. Some books you just cannot help laughing out loud as you read. This is definitely one of them. Yet it is not all humor. Without any tone of moralistic injection, Austin has a way of sharing life lessons he has learned while walking all those miles that make you nod with understanding.
Every mailman should purchase this or receive it as a gift, as it would lighten their load and shorten their route as they think perhaps anew about their high calling. Indeed, the Postmaster General should make Austin's essay on "The Blueness of the Uniform" required reading for all aspiring new mail deliverers. The fact that 25% of the proceeds will go to the Be the Match Foundation, an official partner of the U.S. Postal Service, gives all the more reason for postal workers to get their own copy of this book.
Yet most of all, this book is just an enjoyable read. If you have ever wondered what happens when "dog meets mailman" or your mailman has to deliver to that address in the part of town you would never visit, here's your opportunity to find out. "Walking with the Mailman" delivers!
