(More customer reviews)I have just finished reading the book "Maxfield Parrish and the American Imagists", quite literally from cover to cover and I could not allow the occasion to pass without writing a review. It was, indeed, my profound pleasure to have read this book. I have been an MP aficiondo for probably 45 years of more. During this time I have acquired a very small and modest collection of his art prints as well as a dozen or more books and other miscellaneous items over the years. More importantly along the way I have gained a depth of appreciation of MP's genius as an artist and thinker. The publication of this book in 2004 represents a compendium of this American icon's work that brought it all together for me. It represents a resource and reference that I will be sure to refer to from time to time. The choice of format, quality stock, a faithful rendering and reproduction of the artwork and well-written text are impressive and unexcelled. Excellent!

(More customer reviews)It was to my great advantage to be spending the summer of 1992 in Lenox when I read this book, purchased from the local village. Carol Owens has provided a supurb look into the lives and lifestyles of the gilded aged super rich as well as an excellent portrayal of the architecture of the summer cottages of the Berkshires. Filled with historical facts and "twice-told tales", this book is a rare gem giving the reader a vivid and pictoral view point of life during this era among the social ellete and powerful industrial magnates. I was able to see many of the homes by using Owens' book as a tour guide. It was thoroughly fascinating! I even got a bit carried away when I decided to take an unauthorized tour of the massive (and deserted) 92 room Elm Court, once owned by Emily Vanderbilt Sloane White. The local police were less impressed with my venture. Lookout for the flowershop owner who works out of what used to be Elm Courts' carriage house--he is a real snitch. If you enjoy reading about the "400" and the gilded age or the architecture of this period, you must read this book. It is a real treasure!

(More customer reviews)Gargoyles have gotten to be very popular recently, and any gargoyle fan ought to get the book _American Gargoyles: Spirits in Stone_ (Clarkson Potter) by Darlene Trew Crist, with photographs by Robert Llewellyn, because American gargoyles are fun. It wasn't the original job of gargoyles to be fun. One of the explanations of how gargoyles got into their exalted positions in churches is that they were placed there to entice pagans to come and worship at Christian locales. Those who ran the churches thought that pagan symbols, and scary ones at that, were a good marketing ploy. Perhaps we American moderns are simply amused by carvings of fearsome dragons, but there are plenty of gargoyles shown here that are deliberately humorous caricatures.
The pictures are a treat. This is not a big, coffee-table book, but there are scores of pictures from many American sacred, commercial, and academic buildings. Though American gargoyles reflect the traditions of Europe, many are truly American. The University of Pennsylvania, for instance, has a strictly medieval style of quadrangle, complete with gargoyles, but one of them is a football player. At Washington National Cathedral, there is a gargoyle showing a crooked politician; he has horns, a big belly, a cigar, and a pocket full of dollar bills. There are a pair of gargoyles there which were given by a grandmother in thanks for her two grandsons. One is angelic and one is demonic, and she never said which is which; the grandsons are now grown up and still don't know. A weeping sea turtle is there as a statement of environmental protection. Out of the mouth of a monstrous duck stares a tourist with a camera, a payback from the carver who was the subject of thousands of pictures as he worked.
_American Gargoyles_ could have been a lot bigger, but Crist has included a reading list for those who want to see more. It is a good-looking and informative book.

A Time of Predators (Otto Penzler Presents...) Review

(More customer reviews)The punks can barely be told apart, except for the one who's enormously fat that kids tease him and call him a can of Crisco, and then there's the obligatory punk hero who's so smart he could debate Nietzsche to a draw. The others are pretty nondescript, one of them is allegedly Hispanic but you couldn't prove it by me. These punks go gay bashing and blind a man right in front of Paula Halstead, the beautiful wife of our professor hero. Paula is spotted by the brilliant punk and then becomes a target.
Editor Otto Penzler says that Gores' novel is fascinating in that the street language used by the punks is pretty clean, that today's widespread obscenity hadn't yet infiltrated to street gangs. The characters use a lot of vulgar euphemisms, but the worst they actually say is "so and so has a hard on against you," which if you believe Penzler would have been shocking in the 1960s. The novel is really all about sexual politics and the way in which punks commit rape to silence women.
The first victim, after being raped, kills herself for the shame and the stain leave her unable to face living. Another victim, a young girl of 18 or so, is treated by psychiatrists after being raped many times on a filthy mattress. However her best prognosis is that her life is basically over, and the next man who becomes her lover will receive a "hatpin in the chest." As though rape has made her into a psychopath.
This would make a good, strong movie if the right director took over the reins, and found a way to distinguish the young villains from one another.

(More customer reviews)I have been actively Day Trading for about 2 months now, and have managed to remain profitable. I have gotten better over time, and I eventually see this as a way to earn a living.
I heard about this book as I attended one of Marcus's free seminars online.
I really struggled on whether to give this book a rating of 2 or 3 stars. And that is based on what I think the book is good for. I think the title is a bit misleading? The title kind of bills this book out as a 'COMPLETE Guide to Day Trading.'
When I read the word 'COMPLETE,' I tend to think that it will cover money management, trader mentality, how to identify trends, and most important, detailed explanations into trade setups. Basically I would think it would cover many things about day trading, but most importantly.....specific trade setups.
This book was a decent, quick read. And it does a pretty good job at explaining the basics to brand new day traders. It also has some good organizational information in there for anyone. But if you're looking for a book to explain specific setups, time of day, etc.....this isn't the one for you. Specific trade setups really are just mentioned as a blurb more or less in the book in one chapter. If you've been trading for a while, I would say that since it IS available in paper back, and is relatively in inexpensive, it's not a bad buy, but there are more useful books in my opinion. 'Mastering the Trade' is still the best book I've read thus far.
If this book were billed as anything BUT the 'COMPLETE' guide to day trading, or if the word 'Beginner' were somewhere in the title, I would have given it 3 stars. But to be billed as the COMPLETE guide is what swayed me to report 2 stars. Even after reading this book, there is no way a new trader will read it and be capable of day trading.
I don't feel bad about purchasing this book at all. Decent read, but I do not think it's going to help most day traders. Happy trading!!!

This was so poorly edited (or was there an editor or copy editor involved at all?) that I could not get past the errors and actually "read" the book. I gave up after the first couple sections. So confusing and inconsistent! And that is a shame; it sounds like these folks have an interesting story to tell. Maybe someone else will pick up the baton and tell the story of that company in a coherent way.

Rug Art-RESCUED FROM OBLIVION is a delightful tale of discovery, but a sad reflection on the lack of preservation of North America's most endangered art form that has literally and figuratively been "tramped on" for much too long. Abandoned for more than half a century in the basement of a damp and mould filled former New Glasgow, Nova Scotia rug pattern factory, a determined research team found amazing pen and ink rug art created by an artist who is said to have studied in the same New York art class with noted folk artist Norman Rockwell. Under a leaking sewage pipe in that same factory they unearthed amazing hand cut Mystery stencils that are now rewriting the arts heritage . Their discovery heralds the oldest known commercial designs recovered in Canada, and possibly in North America and a unique pattern printing system hitherto unknown. The searchers found, and rescued from imminent oblivion some 550 pieces of original pen and ink art created by the 1892 factory founder John Garrett and his son Frank. In acquiring remnants of the oldest known rug pattern factory in the world (1892) they also unearthed three unique hand-carved full size rug pattern blocks and a mass of records of early pattern designs from across North America. An intriguing bonus was the salvaging of some 300 hand cut stencils created by a talented unknown artist. Measuring only 3x5" in size-each contained two rug pattern designs. Designated the MYSTERY PATTERNS preliminary research indicates they are the oldest Canadian rug designs ever discovered and possibly the oldest in the world.

THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is an updated version of THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE, which was published in May 2001. The CSKU features nine new chapters, which cover King's work from approximately early 2000 through mid 2005. The CSKU discusses all of King's work through that period, including books like DREAMCATCHER, FROM A BUICK 8, the final three installments of the Dark Tower series, and television series such as Rose Red and Kingdom Hospital. Basically, it covers all of King's work through the present day, with the exception of books like THE COLORADO KID, CELL, and the upcoming LISEY'S STORY, and a few short stories such as "The Things They Left Behind", which appeared in the 2005 anthology TRANSGRESSIONS.
Besides the inclusion of the new chapters, the book's been rearranged and revised in many ways, mostly to correct the factual errors and typos that crept up in the first edition. Hopefully, we caught most of the glitches in the new edition; the publishing gremlins that plague all books are a diligent bunch, however, so I expect folks will find some errors in this version as well.

Publishers Weekly called the original edition "An indispensable insider's guide to the influences on King, his plots and characters, TV and film adaptations and more..."
The Library Journal said that the SKU "...will appeal to serious King fans...[the STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE] will be an especially useful addition to academic resources on contemporary authors."

My favorite quote came from noted Stephen King scholar Stephen J. Spignesi: "THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is as important a book as Douglas Winter's seminal STEPHEN KING: THE ART OF DARKNESS, which paved the way for the rest of us, we Chroniclers of the King. Sadly, she died in 1964, from alcoholism, less than ten years after Peyton Place was published. Emily Toth's biography is a fascinating and compelling story of how two women (Metalious and publisher Kitty Messner)rocked the publishing world with a book that many publishers scoffed at, and dismissed as trash. Toth reveals how timing and crafty publicity tactics started a sensational buzz about a book that was ripe for America's stagnant and sterile 1950's. It broke all records for book sales up to that time, and held that spot for over 10 years. The financial success was liberating yet highly troubling for Grace. It led to a broken marriage, several unhappy afairs, tensions with her family and a fatal addiction to alcohol. Once Peyton Place took off, it had a life of it's own. Although it was continually associated with Grace, she had no control over the popular movie or sensational television series. Grace Metalious was independent, outspoken, and certainly not a conformist. She broke all the rules, succeeded, yet paid a hefty price.

This book fit that need perfectly, as it covers many artists and paintings that the other "all about art" books don't touch upon. I actually got this on the clearance table at Barnes and Noble for $5 (not $55, as advertised here!) but I do think that the book is well worth spending $30 or $35 for, at least. Lovely glossy pages, chock full of well-informed information. Lovely!

(More customer reviews)The Dukes Of Hazzard: The Unofficial Companion is an excellent, well researched book on the classic TV series of 1979-1985. Everything you want to know about the show is all here: from cast and crew interviews, along with bundles of information, and great pictures, this book has it all. It also includes a section on the 1997 TV reunion movie, and even has a section on how to build your own General Lee, the Dukes' trusted 1969 Dodge Charger! Author David Hofstede did a wonderful job on this book which I think should have been called The Official Companion, because it really reads like one. It even includes a foreword written by Daisy Duke herself, actress Catherine Bach. For an Unofficial Companion, this book is just a great read page by page! To all fans of the Dukes of Hazzard TV series, I highly recommend this book!
There's also the upcoming second reunion TV movie, "The Dukes Of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood" on the CBS network to be aired on May 19th, so don't miss it! I wonder if they'll publish an updated edition of this book to include this new TV reunion film?

Had he been alive today, we would know who would be the president in 2004 election without having to take all the polls. Kerry or Bush ? I thought this was one of Gardner's best books.
It is not all math and numerology. Gardner writes about his romance with Dr. Matrix's eurasian daughter to keep people with short atttention span engaged.

(More customer reviews)I think I might have liked this book more if I hadn't read the reviews BEFORE I bought it. I was expecting something much more informative than this. Sample projects, perhaps? Instead there is a chapter introduction discussing the status (or lack thereof) of illustration within the fine and applied art worlds and then the rest of the book consists of syllabus's from different Illustration professors around the country. This is not to say that I didn't get something out of it, because I did, but nowhere near as much as I thought I would.
This would make a great text for an illustration teacher to have on the side, in addition to a textbook, but don't expect any earth shattering information.

Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Value Guide, Second Edition: 1973-2006 Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I do have quite a few Keepsake Ornaments that we've bought over the years for each other to be placed on our Christmas Tree but we're not collectors in the true sense. But I found out full well the value of Hallmark ornaments when I found five pieces in the Frosty Friends collection at a garage sale a couple of years ago for a few bucks. These were numbers 3 through 7 in the series and those few dollars resulted in quite a tidy profit when sold at eBay. Since then we've made it a point to look out for Hallmark ornaments at garage sales and flea markets but the problem was that we really didn't know which ones were really valuable. That all changed when I got this fantastic book by Bangzoom. I have owned a lot of collectible price guides in my life and this is easily one of the best. Their fantastic original price guide has now been updated with a second edition that goes through 2006.
What makes it so great? Simple...how about a picture of every Keepsake ornament from 1973 through 2006...in full color, with the ornament name, retail price, item number, and current value. Add to that the pictures are color coded if they happen to be series or club/event releases. Add to that are outstanding articles on the history of Hallmark, special issue ornaments, protecting and insuring your collection, and an excellent article called "Hallmark Collecting 101" which is a valuable resource whether you are a veteran or novice collector. There's even a list of Hallmark related websites that provide even more resource material.

While the bulk of the book is dedicated to Keepsake ornaments, Bangzoom doesn't stop there. You'll also find sections on the Miniature ornaments introduced in 1988, ornaments for other holidays like Easter and Halloween, special issue ornaments such as the Ambassador Holiday House Collection, and Tree Toppers. There's also a comprehensive, alphabetical index that can double as a collector's checklist, and finally profiles of the Hallmark artists and sculptors. It's truly a complete package and one-stop source for Hallmark collectors. I had a lot of fun thumbing through the book and finding out just how much all of our ornaments were worth. Of course, my wife won't let me sell any of the ones we bought for each other, but now when we hit the garage sales, we'll have the perfect, take-along resource. My highest recommendation!

(More customer reviews)The author examines the years 1910 to 1919 in advertising, architecture, fashion, food, leisure activites, literature, music, performing arts, travel and visual arts. The chapters will be more interesting to the extent you are interested in the topic, but I thought the food chapter was exceptional, as it told us things like what Diamond Jim Brady ate for breakfast. If this book is the first in a series on "American Culture Through Popular History" as i understand it is, it is an auspicious inauguration of what should be a good series.

The House That Jack Built Review

(More customer reviews)I was pleasantly surprised with how great this book is. It's full of haunting set pieces that will stay with you -- to describe them at all will ruin the thrill of surprise for you (and there are a host of nasty surprises throughout the book). I was reluctant to start this novel, thinking, "What can he possibly do with the haunted house theme that we all haven't seen before?" Well, Masterson has come up with something new here -- a fresh twist on the traditional ghost story, with lots of interesting ideas and a terrifying villain that you won't soon forget.
I read many horror novels each year -- it's one of my favorite genres. Like many reviewers here on Amazon, I'm always on the lookout for something I haven't seen before, something exciting and original that will have me flipping the pages as fast as I can. By that standard, this book delivers. It's my first book by Masterson, but it definitely won't be the last!
