(More customer reviews)With his book" Odd Customers," Mr. de Vriend helps to educate people on the realities of restaurant ownership. Set in Coos Bay Oregon, a quiet community on the southern Oregon coast. The book also delves into history and moves along at a nice pace by going back and forth between first person stories and interesting historical accounts. Being from Europe gives the author a unique perspective on our American culture. Overall I found myself relating to many of his observations due to my many years in the restaurant/nightclub industry. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history as well as anyone who enjoys great observational humor.

Odd Customers is the light-hearted, funny, at times touching journal of a Dutch curmudgeon running a German restaurant in a hardscrabble town on the Oregon coast. In short stories alternating with poetic puns, we meet his odd customers. Among those are Ukrainian bikers; Dutchmen whose humor rubs Americans the wrong way; an old lady run over by a bus; a mentally-deranged missionary; a bootlegger's daughter; a bellicose drunk; sanctimonious vegetarians; vandals, bums and picketing feminists; along with many visitors who, like him, still carry lifelong memories of World War II. Woven through the journal are his observations of the Dutch, the Germans, the French, the Americans, their values, and their foods.
